After the death of his wife, Jose Martin Revelo is a man at a crossroads. The world he knew is collapsing all around him; his youngest daughter is moving away to college, and the home he shared with his wife is not his anymore. He seeks the seclusion of a small apartment and quits his job. He is tired and has no idea of what to do. So Martin convinces himself that he wants to see the world. His destination: a small little hamlet in Kentucky named after one of his ancestors... And so he begins a journey of discovery that takes him to Revelo, KY. There he meets a distinguished and mysterious lady, Marilyn, the matriarch of the Carter family, who gives him a trunk left under the care of the family over a century before. Now with the trunk in his hands, Martin finds among its contents the diary of his great-great grandfather, Giuseppe Revelo, who as a young man joined the 14th Tennessee Infantry Regiment. As a soldier he distinguishes himself in combat, and participated and survived the many battles fought by General Robert E. Lee, and the Army of Northern Virginia. Like most soldiers fighting under his command, Giuseppe praised Lee's talent as a leader, but there are doubts, and by the time of the surrender of the last confederate army at Appomattox, he despises Lee. The experience is a journey into the soul of two families intertwined by two wars and separated by a century. Through it all, Martin finds unanswered questions, and becomes aware of the enduring sacrifice of two idealistic young men fighting for a lost cause. It is a trek to find the meaning of a flag, of devotion and sacrifice, a lonely cove in the Cumberland River and ultimately of selfless sacrifice and friendship.
