(RAW Rating: 3.5) - Cold Blooded

Set in the borough of Queens, in New York City during the 1980's, OUT COLD by Daamon Speller is a consummate journey into the lives of three individuals. At age twenty-two, Dirk is the ultimate player, partying and bedding women at will, his actions will become the source of pain for many. Randall, the son of a respected preacher, is considered the nice guy and good friend to all that befriend him, which is a source of consternation. Dirk and Randall are best friends from childhood and upon graduation from high school, are hired by an insurance company and soon room together and according to Dirk, the party's on. Madison is a twenty-eight year old editor of a fashion magazine and her goals are to marry, purchase a house and birth 2.5 children by the time she is thirty-five years old. Madison plans everything to a science and damns anyone who gets in her way. She wants what she wants, when she wants it. What occurs when these three souls meet are a series of events, which involve manipulations, lies and secrets. Dirk and Madison do not like each other and the book examines all of the dynamics involved in that dislike and distrust. Is Dirk jealous of Madison and Randall's relationship? Does Madison believe Dirk is a negative influence on Randall? When dislike turns to a shoulder to lean on, secrets are exposed and truths revealed and the test of the friendships is magnified. Speller ventures back to the 1980's by painting a lively picture with the slang of the time, the music and the youthful antics of the characters portrayed. The dialogue is engaging and humorous. Although the consequences are likely and gut-wrenching, the messages are heartfelt. The addition of the secondary characters, such as family and friends, completes the picture of the main characters and provides an understanding of their behaviors. OUT COLD is a reality check into our deeds and the results of them. Reviewed by Dawn R. Reeves of The RAWSISTAZ(tm) Reviewers

Out Cold - a very entertaining read

I read Out Cold recently during a beach vacation and found the book to be a quick and entertaining read. I thoroughly enjoyed the writing and thought the character development of the two male characters throughout the book was well done. I particularly liked how their characters appeared to almost switch places in behavior and personality as the story progressed, and how the writing made this switch appear plausible and believable. The female character, Madison, was a strong character also, I enjoyed her spunk and determination. I've read previous books from Daamon Speller and think this one was the best so far.

Friendship can endure.....

This book was well written and this helped the story flow well and the characters were very interesting. I truly enjoyed this book. It was refreshing to have Dirk & Randall story told in a true male voice. It is what made the book more realistic and true for me. It was fun climbing into the "way back mobile" and remembering the club scene and the music we all danced to back in the day. The message that I got from the book is that age does not equal maturity. It is your life experience that gives you maturity. Then sadly, some of us never mature (Dirk's Dad).

Sisterhood Book Club review

Out Cold by Daamon Speller is a story between best friends Dirksten Francis and Randall Crawford...polar opposites. Dirk is the self-proclaimed ladies man and makes no bones about it. This twenty-two year old lives for the ladies and the New York nightlife. While Randall is your all-American nice guy with a good heart. Sadly, those attributes always seems to land him in the undesired "friend zone". Working together and living together appears to be faring well for the dynamic duo until one night of clubbing changed it all. In walks Madison Jones-wanted by Dirk, but taken by Randall. I enjoyed Out Cold. I liked the way the author unmasked the two male characters and allowed me to explore inside their heads. Being able to go behind the scenes and read about their family life was also an added bonus. The unpredictability of the characters kept me flipping the pages for the outcome. This was my first read by the author and I'm sure it won't be my last. Reviewer Iris Celeste

Out Cold Definitely Hooks You Until The End!

I found the novel thoroughly engaging. It's a fun, quick, and easy read with lots of twists and turns. Don't ever think you'll know how the story will end ... no, the author puts a different spin on things that makes it impossible to predict the ending -- I like that! The characters are immensely likeable. The "slang" wasn't forced or overdone -- the sex scenes, either. Mr. Speller is a compelling storyteller. I love the way that he brilliantly handles a myriad of characters. Out Cold truly kept me on the edge of my seat with every page from beginning to end. Now ... where is book #3??
