Dachlan Cartwright is a Liverpool Welshman who was a student at Liverpool University from 1962-5. He was "there" to witness one of the greatest explosions of popular music in history. This is his tribute in verse, not just to The Beatles, but to the other Merseybeat bands which they spearheaded. Other themes include components of Liverpool culture like football and comedy. As a teacher of English literature, Dachlan hopes the examples of cynghanedd, haiku and sonnet, for example, will encourage students to experiment in these and others forms. But above all, the verses should be read, preferably aloud, as fun, and if they can convey a shared frisson of recognition to those who were also "there", and a whiff of authenticity, more pungent (like the Iron Door Club) than a prose account, to those who weren't, then they will have done their job.
