Ordinary Miracles

Now the sons of the prophets said to Elisha, "See, the place where we dwell under your charge is too small for us. Let us go to the Jordan and each of us get there a log, and let us make a place for us to dwell there." And he answered, "Go." Then one of them said, "Be pleased to go with your servants." And he answered, "I will go." So, he went with them. And when they came to the Jordan, they cut down trees. But as one was felling a log, his axe head fell into the water, and he cried out, "Alas, my master It was borrowed." Then the man of God said, "Where did it fall?" When he showed him the place, he cut off a stick and threw it in there and made the iron float. And he said, "Take it up." So, he reached out his hand and took it. - 2 Kings 6:1-7 ESV

If you are a follower of Jesus, your Lord is a God who cares deeply about your life. He celebrates with you in the joys and joins you in the struggles. He demonstrates his love with daily miracles, aligning the details of your experiences perfectly to work all things together for good.

The seemingly insignificant story of Elisha recovering an axe from the bottom of the Jordan River is beautiful biblical proof of our caring God. Imagine the distress of the impoverished man described as a son of a prophet, who cried out "it was borrowed"-literally, "begged." Anyone who's struggled to make ends meet can understand the panic he must have felt and recognize the seriousness of this problem. The axe had been loaned to him; and on account of his poverty, he could not procure another. What could be thought insignificant to most, was an extraordinary miracle to this poor man who could have lost everything he owned because of the accident.

However, this story demonstrates that God doesn't reserve miracles for the elite, kings, or presidents. His signs and wonders aren't kept back for national broadcasts, to be witnessed only corporately. The Lord is matchless, glorious, all powerful, all knowing, and yet he cares about the small seemingly insignificant problems in life. He is in the details of the path to salvation and sanctification, working all things together for good, even before the elect are aware of the call on their lives.

This is a personal account of unexplainable coincidences, movements of the Spirit, and wonders of God today. It chronicles the goodness of the Lord in the face of this present darkness, and offers evidence that Jesus is alive, working, and accessible in 21st century America. Most of all, it establishes that God is speaking to all of us; we need only to listen.
