Book Overview

Opera and Ideas is a study of the connections between music and intellectual history. Through lucid analysis of six operas and two song cycles, Paul Robinson shows how operas give musical and dramatic expression to ideas about the self, society, and history.

Five stars is not enough...

I'm reading Opera & Ideas for the third time. It is, obviously, a favorite. For anyone who loves opera AND ideas, Paul Robinson is someone to have close at hand. He doesn't review many operas and, in fact, includes two Schubert song cycles in the mix. What he does have to say is done with education, experience and intellectual honesty, to say nothing of his fine ability at writing. When I accessed this site, it was to see what others had to say. I was confronted by not a single review. I hope you trip over this one and get curious. Nancy Eckert
