Of Turmoil and Talent

The story begins with Jenna Adams, an aspiring ten-year-old girl who loses her father to divorce a year later. Jenna is smitten with the music of Eric Ries, who becomes her musical guiding star and fills the emotional void of a lifelong fatherless child. The story of Jenna and Eric shows how great talent and accomplishment from an early age develops in the crucible of emotional turmoil. No wonder that Wunderkinder so often are shooting stars who glow with brilliance until they enter the dense atmosphere of adult life only to burn out. Great gifts and fame can exact a heavy toll on the psyche. Later enters Josh Kendal, a man who abandoned his career as a Julliard-educated composer to become a talent agent for Atlas Artists. With words that have implications for the other main characters, Josh stated, "I love composing, but wasn't masochistic enough to pursue a career." But Jenna and Eric are no shooting stars. They battle their psychological demons by making more and better music and love, and in the end they leave us not with a three-note major chord in the parent position, but a perfect fifth with a suspended note in the middle begging for movement or resolution. Will the author segue into a sequel of this remarkable American classical musicians' Entwicklungsroman? Lawrence M. Probes, M.D. Psychiatrist

A Really Good Read

This is a wonderful story, well written and although full of references to classical music that went over my head, they do not detract from the story. You do not have to understand music terms to appreciate this story which kept me enthralled and wanting to know what happens next. You will not want to put this book down until you have finished it.

A Dazzling Love Story!

A love story with crescendos and allegros that create beautiful and exciting music on every page. The author has composed a book which makes the reader feel a part of the story from the first sentence and wanting more...let's hope there is another book coming soon from Ms. Conroy...it's what the world needs now:..dazzling, intriguing love...a symphony for life. I'd say she knows the score. Helen Rogers

Would make a nice movie

This is a love story with a musical theme, and written by a musician. I thought it was going to be a bit stuffy[this was a gift book], but it is actually wonderful. Conroy really makes the music come alive and grow as Jenna grows to womanhood,as does her obsession with skirt-chasing composer,Eric Ries. All while I was reading it I thought, gee this would make a nice movie, with a lot of singing and musical trios, etc. A very good read.

A Love Story!

C'mon. I don't read love stories. Except I read this one. I was attracted by the gorgeous cover and the musical theme. I usually start love stories, but don't get too far in. But this one is so different from what I usually see, because Conroy's story is told chronologically, with Jenna as a little girl and maturing emotionally and musically. And the music is one of the characters! It's a bit racy in places, but not overdone. All-in-all, a very nice read.
