Simple but Helpful

I appreciated Tony Coffey's book, "Once a Catholic," for it is simple, with a friendly tone, based on Scripture, and convincing to the honest-hearted reader. It is not thorough, and it was not intended to be. Yet it covers the subject adequately for the beginner. It does show that so much in Roman Catholicism is unscriptural, false, and rests on unbiblical and anti-Biblical tradition, rather than the authoritative teaching of Christ and the apostles. I highly recommend the book, although it is now out of print. I notice that Coffey has written a newer volume, "Answers to Questions that Catholics are Asking," and I would assume that it also is very helpful.

Excellent resource on the subject

The book arrived in good time. I bought it for a gift because I had read it and knew its value.

A must read for Catholics

It is a great book that every Catholic should read. I came from a very Catholic family. One of my uncles is a Priest and as you can imagine my family was very Catholic, trying to obey all the regulations as best as we could. This book shows you what the Catholic Church teaches you and what the bible teaches. It's not about evangelicals against Catholics or Catholics against evangelicals. It's about knowing what the bible teaches and exhorting us to follow Jesus. It doesn't matter what church you go to. Of course assuming that you go to one that teaches you correctly, because the bible teaches us to be careful because many false teaches, false prophets and false Christ would rise up and deceive us. That's why this is a great book because it helps us check to make sure we are learning correct doctrine.

A Catholic Must Read!

You can not put a price on the value of this book! I was literally born & raised a Roman Catholic here in Western NY, and live in an area of the United States where Roman Catholicism makes up 90% of the population. It's kind of like a Catholic version of Salt Lake City. It would have been extremely easy to just accept my family tradition and live and die a Roman Catholic. When I was first challenged 6 years ago by a co-worker to start reading the Bible I never suspected that there was a difference between the Word of God and the doctrines and teachings of the Roman Catholic Church. Now over 6 years later I can finally stop my search for a book to share with family and friends who are caught up in the Roman Catholic deception. I had been looking for a book that covered the many aspects of the man made Catholic traditions and heretical doctrines but was geared towards the lay-person and not the Theologian. Also a book that was not offensive to the Roman Catholic. Many "dye in the wool" Roman Catholics who have belonged to the Catholic Church for over 50-60 years are extremely hard to sit down and talk to because sentimentality and emotions run high. This book is an excellent tool to have the Catholic read and have everything laid out on the table, which creates an excellent starting point for a discussion. This is due to the fact that as a Catholic, seeing the beliefs and teachings of the Catholic Church compared to the Bible and Jesus' own Words, one cannot in honesty, deny the conflict. This book is a must read for any Roman Catholic out there or to any Christian who is trying to reach a Catholic. The final point that must be made is that if the Catholic can read this book and still hold to the teachings and traditions of the Roman Catholic church, than they are denying Jesus Christ, of Whom the Scriptures speak!

How come Catholics do that?

I only wish there were a higher rating than 5 stars!Whether or not the reader is a Catholic, questions such as; "why do Catholics do those things or espouse these beliefs?" may have been on your mind. Tony Coffey provides insightful, well founded and valid answers to such queries. Like Tony Coffey, I as a former Catholic (now a garden variety Christian), and my siblings were taught many things based on the traditions of the Church. Now as a rational, thinking adult, I've discovered that those traditions are not founded on the written word of God- the Bible. Tony Coffey explains the Vatican councils and why the faithful are indoctrinated toward blind obedience to the rules of the CHURCH and the demands imposed regardless of the validity of such rules. Catholics like lemmings are to follow blindly along. In a respectful tone, "Once a Catholic" opens one's eyes to a clear understanding and to just what the Vatican has been engaging in under the guise as the first, one, and only, universal Christian church. This book explains the Catholics belief in the diety of the Virgin Mary and everything that implies. He explains why value is placed on the repetitious praying of rosaries, novenas, and why Catholics go to the saints as intercessors. "Once a Catholic" doesn't offend or attempt to discredit the Catholic Church. The book merely says with sensitivity, "believer beware," to those who care to read and ponder on the value of the truth. This book is an intelligent approach to issues that have challenged us all. Read this book in one sitting. You'll be glad you did and it will be time well spent.
