This book will help you avoid mistakes that millions experience every day simply because they do not have the basic knowledge that you will have if you take time to read this text. This book should... This description may be from another edition of this product.
My daughter received this book for a graduation gift. I was so impressed with it that I'm ordering more to give as gifts to her graduating friends. I wish I had owned such a practical book when I graduated and/or moved out of my parents' house. I still may have to borrow it, if "IT" ever happens to me. Thanks Mr. Bowers for such a valuable book (I sincerely mean that). I just wish I had thought to write something like this!!
to bad it was not written sooner

If this book had only been written sooner...Mr Bowers could have saved my poor mother countless hours of Resume writing. My husband and I gave this book to our oldest daughter just before her graduation and she has found it very useful, she refers to it often and has given it as a gift to several friends. On Your Own For The First Time Is a great book, It has taken alot of "What if" and turned it to "wow it's that easy?"Im sure we will be buying a new one for our youngest too.
good book for divorced woman

After a recent divorce I found myself without the basic skills of understanding; leases, banking, credit cards and insurance. I found this book after visiting a friend and discussing my situation with her, my friend said this book helped her son who was leaving for college. I checked it out and then later bought my own copy. This is really good stuff.

"Mom, how do I write a resume?""Mom, how can I figure out what my credit score is?""Mom, what's renter's insurance?"After constantly calling my mother every time I had a question about how to do something, she bought me this book. It goes through everything you need to know about starting a life of your own. It does a good job of giving you just as much information as you need. If you have questions, they tell you where you can get more in depth information. The book has six sections. 1.) Employment: resumes, cover letters, job interviews, how to change jobs2.) Moving Out: renting an apartment, having your appliances turned on, how to rent furniture and appliances, how to get renter's insurance3.)Getting a Ride: buying a car, car insurance, selling a car, how to care for your car4.)Money Matters: personal investing, credit cards, filing an income tax return, credit problems and how to fix them, checking accounts5.) When "It" Happens: unemployment, understanding pawnshops, bankruptcy, small claims court, medical insurance, traffic court, what to do after a car crash6.) Life Skills: manners and etiquetteIf you're a senior in high school, a college student, or a mother trying to get your child to stop asking you questions, this is a perfect book for you.
Great gift and resourceful guide!

This book is a wonderful guide, not only for those "on their own for the first time", but also as a resourse for any adult with responsibilities for their own being. It addresses cars, homes, insurance, and other less frequent items, like preparing a tax return, fixing flat tires, applying for a job, drugs, alcohol and depression. It is a great gift for high school and college grads, as it will help them prepare for the transition from a sheltered life into the real world and aide them in dealing with their responsibilities and life in general.
