Objective-C 2.0 Programming in 14 Days: Master Foundation, ARC, Blocks, and the Objective-C Runtime Through Daily Drills (Learn Programming in 14 Days)

Fourteen days. Every claim run.

Objective-C 2.0 Programming in 14 Days is a two-week course in the language behind every Cocoa and Cocoa Touch codebase written before Swift, and behind a great deal of code still shipping today. It answers one question over and over: what happens when a message is sent, and who owns the object that receives it.

Each day states its rules in as few words as they will take and then shows every one of them working. There are 322 complete programs in this book. Every one was compiled and run before it was printed, and the output under each is the output it produced - including the ones that fail to compile, where the compiler's own words are what is printed, and the ones that stop, where the runtime's message is.

The book is built for working rather than reading. Each day closes with a fixed ladder of problem sets, 756 problems in all: recall questions, problems worked through with their solutions printed, complete programs written out and explained, and then two sets with no answers anywhere in the book. 322 figures, all drawn for black-and-white print, show the mechanism each program demonstrates.

One program runs through all fourteen days. It starts as a struct on Day 2 and finishes on Day 14 as a multi-file program with an error domain, a file format, a delegate, a category, an importer and a thread - so every mechanism arrives because something needed it rather than because a chapter had a gap.

It assumes a reader who can write C. Pointers, structs, header files and a compiler on a command line are taken for granted. No experience of Objective-C is assumed, and none of Cocoa or of application development: this is a book about the language and its framework, and no listing in it draws anything on a screen.
