Non-binary Identities in Subtitles

This paper examines the translation of the English pronoun "they/them" and, by extension, the representation of non-binary identities in Croatian subtitles for selected Netflix series. The starting point is the structural asymmetry between English-which has an established gender-neutral form in "singular they"-and Croatian, whose strongly pronounced gender system leaves no room for a standardized equivalent. The central question of this thesis is: How is the English pronoun "they/them" translated in Croatian subtitles for selected Netflix series in which non-binary characters play a central role? The three sub-questions address the challenges and strategies involved in translation, as well as the reception of these translations by the Croatian non-binary community. Additionally, the study examined the extent to which these translations contribute to the visibility or invisibility of non-binary identities.
