Ambition and passion have long marked the career of violinist Cordelia von Kraat. However, at the dawn of her fifth year as doctoral student at St. Albertus Magnus Catholic University in Nouvelle Arniers, Louisiana, her momentum has stagnated. Her music has become sterile; performance opportunities have dried up, and her love life is but a distant memory.
Then, on a rainy September night, she enters a shadowy and forgotten pawn shop and purchases a violin whose soundboard was carved from an old spirit board. The first note cuts through the callouses on her fingers, and as the blood flows into the strings, her soul flows once again through her music.
With her fire rekindled, all praise the return of her passion, paid performance opportunities abound, and she reconnects with a former lover. But as the premiere of her doctoral composition nears, practice and performance dominate her schedule; relationships fade into silence, and her mood becomes prickly and volatile. And as her friends seek to understand the source of the change, the violin demands more blood, more passion, and more devotion. As Cordelia's performance reaches its grand crescendo, will it be a Symphony of Triumph or a Nocturne for a Lost Soul?
