By: 杨国庆

A detailed explanation of the causes and consequences of Zhu Yuanzhang's establishment of the capital at Nanjing, revealing the ins and outs of the construction of the "unparalleled city wall." The construction of Nanjing city in the early Ming Dynasty, through the architectural form of the "wall," articulated the legitimate order of the capital as the "central land of the state," reflecting the course of Zhu Yuanzhang's thought in pursuing "planning greatness from within the residence" in order to realize the traditional sense of the Ming founding capital "dwelling at the center and planning for the four directions." This book systematically sorts out the issues surrounding the establishment and construction of the capital in the early Ming Dynasty from the perspectives of concept, planning, institutional system, and construction. In particular, it provides detailed explanations of the two-capital system and the establishment and abolition of the central capital, urban layout and architectural hierarchy, and the relationship between Nanjing's two city constructions and the "central land of the state." Through interpreting the brick inscriptions of the Nanjing city wall, it not only clarifies relevant historical facts about the wall's construction but also reveals the organizational forms of corv e labor and the operating conditions of grassroots society in the early Ming Dynasty.
