Cuore (or The Heart of a Child) is a diary-form novel written by Italian author Edmondo De Amicis. The story is told from the perspective of Enrico, a fourth-grade elementary school student, and recounts what he sees, hears, and feels both inside and outside of school over the course of one academic year - from the first day of school in October to the following July. For this reason, the book could also be called "A Story of a Schoolchild's Year." The protagonist, Enrico, is an ordinary elementary school student who possesses both the strengths and weaknesses common to most children. He loves learning, yet sometimes entertains thoughts of being lazy. He loves his parents and siblings deeply, yet occasionally experiences conflicts or even quarrels with them. He also cares greatly for his classmates and friends, though from time to time disagreements arise. Likewise, his friends - like Enrico himself - have complex and ever-changing personalities, emotions, and inner worlds. Although each child comes from a different family and has a different background, on the pure and equal ground of the schoolyard, they are all free and equal.
