However, he was eventually slandered and expelled from the capital city. Soon after, the kingdoms of Qin and Chu went to war, and Chu was defeated. Seeing the suffering of the common people without being able to help them, Qu Yuan was filled with despair. On the fifth day of the fifth lunar month, he threw himself into the Miluo River, clutching a large stone. The people of Chu rushed to the river to save him, but they could not. From then on, every year on the fifth day of the fifth lunar month, people commemorated Qu Yuan by racing dragon boats. They also threw sticky rice balls into the river as offerings to him. Several years passed. One night, the people dreamed that Qu Yuan appeared to them. He said, "The fish and shrimp in the river have been eating the rice you throw in for me. If you wrap the rice in bamboo or reed leaves and shape them into pointed corners, the fish and shrimp will be afraid of being pricked and will not dare to eat them." So the people began wrapping the rice in leaves before throwing it into the river. The fish and shrimp no longer dared to steal the offerings. Later, people called these rice dumplings zongzi. To honor Qu Yuan's memory, the fifth day of the fifth lunar month was designated as the Dragon Boat Festival (Duanwu Festival). On this day, people eat zongzi, and in many parts of southern China, they also hold dragon boat races. This book was created by the Preschool Education Research Center of the National Institute of Education Sciences, in collaboration with renowned folk custom experts, kindergarten teachers, and artists. It presents engaging stories and illustrations with distinctive Chinese characteristics from a child-friendly perspective, all in the form of a picture book. To help children better understand the story, this series also provides free audio recordings of the story, narrated by a winner of the China Broadcasting Host Golden Microphone Award. 屈原在楚国做官时，提出了很多治理国家的好办法，百姓们都很爱戴他。但最后他却受到排挤，被赶出了京城。不久，秦国和楚国打仗，楚国败了。看到百姓受苦受难，自己却无法解决，屈原很痛苦！在五月初五这天，他抱着一块大石头跳进了汨罗江。楚国的百姓赶过来营救屈原，却没成功。这以后，每年的五月初五，人们就通过赛龙舟的方式来纪念屈原。人们还把给屈原准备的糯米饭扔进江里。这样过了几年，一天晚上，百姓们突然梦见屈原来了。屈原说："你们送给我的米饭，都被江里的鱼虾吃了。如果你们用粽叶包上米饭，做成有尖角的样子，鱼虾们怕尖角扎着它们，它们就不敢吃了。"于是人们就用粽叶包上米饭再投到江里，鱼虾们再也不去抢吃这些包着粽叶的米饭了。后来，人们就把这种食品叫"粽子"。后来，为了纪念屈原，人们就把五月初五这天定为端午节。这一天人们都吃粽子，在南方的许多地方，人们还要赛龙舟。 本书由中国教育科学研究院学前教育研究中心组织著名民俗专家、幼儿园教师和美术工作者共同完成，从儿童的视角编写有情趣的故事、绘制有中国特色的图画，ñ
