At the end of every year, it would come to places where people lived and harm them. To escape, villagers had to flee with their families, carrying the elderly and young children. On the thirtieth day of the twelfth lunar month that year, a child wearing a red jacket came to the village, begging from house to house. The villagers were busy running away, and no one paid him any attention. Only an old woman at the edge of the village gave him some food and urged him to flee to the mountains to hide. But the child refused to leave, insisting that he would drive Xi away. That night, Xi arrived. It charged straight toward the brightly lit house of the old woman - but was frightened back by the red colors, the blazing lights, and the loud crackling sounds. In the end, the child drove Xi away. The next day was the first day of the first lunar month. When the villagers returned, the old woman told them about the child in the red jacket who had chased away Xi. And so, the thirtieth day of the twelfth lunar month gained a new name: Chu Xi (Eve of Passing Xi). On this day, every family pastes couplets, sets off firecrackers, keeps their candles burning brightly, and stays awake through the night waiting for the new year to arrive. The day after Chu Xi is the first day of the first lunar month - the Spring Festival (Chinese New Year). The Spring Festival has since become the most important traditional holiday in Chinese folk culture. This book was created by the Preschool Education Research Center of the National Institute of Education Sciences, in collaboration with renowned folk custom experts, kindergarten teachers, and artists. It presents engaging stories and illustrations with distinctive Chinese characteristics from a child-friendly perspective, all in the form of a picture book.
