Among them was a minister named Jie Zitui, who remained faithfully by Chong'er's side. Once, they lost their way and could find nothing to eat. Jie Zitui secretly cut a piece of flesh from his own thigh and cooked it for Chong'er. Later, Chong'er finally returned to his kingdom and became the ruler. He generously rewarded all the ministers who had followed him into exile - but Jie Zitui did not come to receive his reward. Chong'er went to invite him in person, only to learn that Jie Zitui had taken his elderly mother and hidden in the mountains. Someone suggested setting fire to the mountain to force Jie Zitui out. But after three days and three nights, the fire went out - and Jie Zitui was still nowhere to be found. Later, they discovered him leaning against a burned old willow tree, with his mother on his back. They had both died. Heartbroken, Chong'er ordered that Jie Zitui and his mother be buried beneath that willow tree. To honor Jie Zitui's memory, the day was designated as the Cold Food Festival (Hanshi Festival), when no fires were to be lit anywhere in the kingdom, and only cold food could be eaten. The following year on the Cold Food Festival, Chong'er led his ministers to eat cold food at the foot of the mountain. The next day, they climbed the mountain to visit the grave. Suddenly, they saw that the old willow tree had sprouted tender new green branches. Chong'er named it the "Willow of Qingming" (Qingming Willow). That day happened to be one of the 24 solar terms - Qingming (Clear Brightness). It was then designated as the Qingming Festival (Tomb-Sweeping Day). This book was created by the Preschool Education Research Center of the National Institute of Education Sciences, in collaboration with renowned folk custom experts, kindergarten teachers, and artists. It presents engaging stories and illustrations with distinctive Chinese characteristics from a child-friendly perspective, all in the form of a picture book.
