When you're unarmed and staring down the barrel of a gun, you won't have a second chance to take control of the situation. Bradley Steiner, Combato expert, uses detailed descriptions and photos to demonstrate the types of assailants and weapons -- handgun, knife, bludgeon, shoulder weapon and improvised weapons -- you could face and the instant, ruthless action that will disarm and overwhelm your attacker.
A good basic guide to self-defense against an armed attacker.

Even though this book was written more than twenty years ago, it is a classic in its field. There are no fancy and impractical techniques in this book. The author has experience in military close quarter combat systems, and the techniques he teaches are based upon the reality of street combat. Though I do not agree with all the techniques in this manual; nevertheless, the author does show some very effective techniques against the knife and other weapons. I do like his approach to defending against the knife by using a chair and any other objects available. In conclusion, even though the techniques are not complex, they still require a lot of practice to master. Rating: 4 Stars. Joseph J. Simple and Very Effective For Street Combat

This volume is one of the better texts available on REALISTIC techniques for unarmed defense against an armed attacker. The system presented is reminiscent of the WWII hand-to-hand combat taught to Rangers and British Commandos, and the Combatives taught to Special Forces soldiers in Vietnam and is devoid of flashy, unrealistic responses. This is the same stuff that saved many a Special Operations and OSS operative's life in time of war. The reviewer who unfavorably compares what is taught in this book with MMA fighting in sports events is harboring a very dangerous and mistaken viewpoint. I've been a soldier and a law enforcement officer, as well as a martial artist, and I can tell you that rolling on the ground with an armed assailant is a good way to get stabbed to death, or stomped by your assailant's buddies. Steiner wrote with a "Life and Death" street combat mentality. This stuff works because it doesn't require someone to memorize a large number of flashy moves. It is simple, to-the-point, and effective.
Good text, would make a good addition

This is a solid book. The most important aspect of this book is that of telling the reader "like it is". Brad does not give "Hollywood" style defenses. I've trained with the author, and known him for several years. This does not mean that I rubber stamp his book. My views can be quite different from Brad's. Still, this book will give the reader a solid start on weapons defenses.
