A power surge rips sixteen-year-old Billy Vance from his family's fairgrounds in Florida and drops him into Kisaragi Valley, a mountain town powered entirely by wooden gears. His pet alligator, Mr. Snappy, arrives as a wind-up toy made of sky-blue porcelain. The portal home is locked. The only way back is to stabilize the valley's ancient Clockwork Heart before a sixteen-day countdown hits zero.

The only thing standing in their way is a strict safety audit and Hina Arakawa, a stubborn guild apprentice fighting to save her grandfather's workshop. She needs to repair a giant mechanical dragon. She also needs Billy to stay far away from it.

Hina's craft forbids iron tools and modern shortcuts. Billy's duct-tape instincts keep making things worse. But he can hear something no one else can: the fatal stutter deep in the gears. If they cannot learn to work together, the valley falls, the dragon stays broken, and Billy never makes it home to say goodbye to the friend who believed in him first.
