3 1/2 stars - Nice little romance, a few lacking ingredients but enjoyable nonetheless

From the back cover: Which was worse - the scandal or the pain? Mercy Yeomans was regarded as a paragon of virtue in the tiny village where she'd grown up. Then, one passion-filled night with Croft Latimer had altered her quiet existence irrevocably. Turned out of her flat, spurned by her friends and rejected by her fiance', Mercy was too ashamed and hurt to think clearly. All she knew was that she had to flee her accusers - even if it meant escaping in to the same strong male arms that had given her so much trouble - and so much pleasure.... MY THOUGHTS: I enjoyed this book and in the beginning and middle it had a lot of potential. We have the heroine ordered to keep an eye out and the hero and to make sure he doesn't cause trouble in her friend's wedding, etc. Oooh, the mystery! Why did her friend asked that of her? The hero was also interesting and your typical rich, arrogant, rich and handsome dude. The heroine, old fashioned, seemingly meek (at first) but gains fire and spirit later. I enjoyed the book, but I was a little disappointed that Steele didn't really update/said much about the friend' situation or the hero's sister's marriage situation. If you read the book you'll know I'm talking about. Like I want to see how her friend will react with the heroine ending up with hero/is the friend really into her new husband or definitely money hungry/friend really care about her?? and will hero's sister definitely go back to her husband? I know stupid questions but I still want to know =P But those are all minor. The story was still enjoyable and it was very sweet on how the hero confesses and heroine swallows her pride and gives him her own proposition, hahaha!

Mercy Yeomans was a woman being used by her boyfriend Philip, and his mom, I have found that in most small towns are friendly, and very kind, unless you cross them as an outsider not in the town Mercy lived in. They were mean and quick to judge. I was surprised they didn't just try to tar and feather Croft. Mercy never hurt anyone in her life, but when a old school friend Hilary Drivers asked Mercy to be in her wedding, Mercy was surprised, because Hilary had little in common with Mercy, and though she was nice with it, she had no problem telling Mercy about their differences. Mercy was a brides maid, but when Hilary saw Croft Latimer, she lost all her snobbishness. She begged Mercy to help her with Croft, or he would ruin her wedding. Mercy being soft hearted watched as the other brides maids tried to get Croft's attention. Then she gave it a try, and hey presto, Croft was hooked, Hilary's younger brother Justin disliked Mercy because she didn't care if he was rich or not she just treated him like a kid, and he paid her back, at the reception he kept giving Mercy spiked drinks. Each drink made her more thirsty. By the end of the party Mercy was sloshed. Croft took her home and HE DID NOT HAVE HIS WAY WITH HER!!!!! But the next morning when Mercy woke up Croft was in the bed next to her, and she thought she had suffered a fate worse than death, until her boyfriend came in and found them in the bed together. Now in the same circumstances I would have expected him to react the way he did, but he should have asked Mercy, and trusted her to give him the facts. Croft didn't help at all and he didn't because he was already in love with Mercy, he just didn't want to admit it. Then when the tables are turned and Crofts sister thinks he and Mercy are an idem, it's not so funny to him, as when Mercy was the one in that position.
