No Appeal

Just ok. Here is my issue: at the start of the book, none of the characters appealed to me. At all. I felt bad for the main character but he didn't have enough personality to tie me in. The cat snubbed him. The witch betrayed him. The girl snipped at him. As time went on, I began to hate every character. Characters have reasons. Characters evolve, and these characters did eventually evolve, but you have to start out with a best friend character or cute animal or the cinnamon roll protagonist people will grab pitchforks and hunt the author down to defend (not really, don't worry budding authors XD). When your book doesn't start out with a lovable or relatable character it deters people from reading. If you're going to start out with a completely dark beginning, it needs to be over quick. Within a chapter. People want that sliver of good in an otherwise dark world. Especially in a children's book, as I believe this is meant to be. Overall, not terrible, but not moorific. I give it two and a calf out of five cows.
