Nemi Vol. 3

This was my first time reading Nemi and I absolutely loved it. I'm definitely gonna pick up volumes I & II. Nemi is great, she is laugh out loud funny. Speaks her mind and doesn't care who likes it or not. Her attitude and dark humor are what make her lovable to me. Nemi is addicted to sweets, and a fan of Lord of the Rings. That's a girl after my own heart! Ms. Myhre has created a endearing character both in the art and personality. Nemi is a comic strip from Norway, created in 1997. She can also be found in the UK in the Metro newspaper. All three volumes of Nemi are also available in the U.S.

A fun, laugh out loud experience

I found reading Nemi a fun, laugh out loud experience. I liked goth girl Nemi Montoya's dark humor and refusal to be a responsible grown up. And I enjoyed her cynical outlook on life and how she rationalized her misadventures to herself and everyone else. Her misadventures include botched job interviews, bar hopping, disastrous dates, well pretty much any ordinary activity gone wrong or right, if your looking at it from Nemi's point of view. Nemi is also honest to a comical fault. I felt I had so much in common with Nemi from her fascination with Lord of the Rings, to buying clothes in all shades of black and her choices in music. She's my inner me, at least like I'd want to be if I didn't have to be a responsible adult. Nemi is written and drawn by Lise Myhre. Nemi was originally written in Norwegian then translated to English. I love the illustrations, they are simple and gorgeous. Nemi is gorgeous. Even though I found the majority of the Nemi comic strips hilarious there were a few that didn't make much sense to me. I think this was because the humor was most likely lost in translation. But there weren't many of these strips to be a problem for me. I plan on looking for more Nemi comics in the future and finding copies of the previous volumes. There is a quote on the back of the book by Tori Amos that I think sums up Nemi perfectly: "There is a little of Nemi in all of us - this I believe to be the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth."

Deplorably twisted

I can't believe how political incorrectness can be so funny. Really, Lise Myhre is a hoot. She must have had some twisted childhood, perhaps a traumatic experience (or dozen) transformed her into a cynical, off the wall, brilliant cartoonist. In truth, I read many, many comic strip compilations that make me laugh every now and then. Some challenge the status quo and resemble someone I know. Not Nemi. I know her, or someone like her...that scares me. Her anti-social, anti-establishment, anti-conformism, anti-whatever is left, reveals that the world is not a vanilla paste consistency and even the `normal' cast share this "I can't believe she just did that" mindset. For instance, Nemi visits the art museum, stops in front of a Vampyre painting, poses, then scares the crap out of two seniors! So funny. She drinks. She swears. She eats too much chocolate. She is single (surprise). She is unemployed. She likes shopping. Part in society, part out, she hovers inbetween like a case of bad gas. She is also loveable in a lost puppy kind of love. Kind of like, "Oooh, here is this stray dog, can we have this puppy daddy?". Yeah, you know it. Once they are warm, the attitude comes out, and you almost wish you weren't so charitable. I have an aunt like her. She is sarcastic, bold, brash, and yet practical. Okay, maybe she's not like her too much. Oops, she's actually married with kids who aren't Goths. Nemi III, read it, laugh every page, pass it on. The world needs a little more destructive cynicism. [...] Tim Lasiuta
