Neil Peart: The Biography

Born in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada, Peart grew up in Port Dalhousie (now part of St. Catharines). As the eldest of four siblings, he enjoyed a happy childhood filled with music and exploration. His early exposure to rhythm came from tapping out beats on household objects with chopsticks, which eventually led his parents to buy him a drum kit for his 14th birthday. By this time, Peart had already begun playing in local bands like The Eternal Triangle and honing his skills under the tutelage of Don George at the Peninsula Conservatory of Music.

At 18, driven by ambition but frustrated by limited opportunities in Canada, Peart moved to London, England, hoping to break into the professional music scene. Despite some success performing in small bands and doing session work, financial struggles forced him to sell jewelry at a shop called The Great Frog on Carnaby Street. During this period, he discovered the writings of novelist and philosopher Ayn Rand, whose ideas deeply influenced his early lyrical themes.
