Sean is a young programmer trying to make a name for himself by developing a fully conscious and self-aware AI system. But the problem proves much more elusive than creating a simple chat-bot or chess program, which are programmed for their specific tasks. Facing ever escalating pressure to produce results before his funding runs out, he finds himself exhausted and dispirited, until one day he is visited by Viv, a stunning yet beguiling woman who had until then resolutely ignored him. She recruits him to meet a self-styled mystic with powerful connections and ambitious plans. Initially dismissive, he falls for her charms and agrees to allow the mystic to perform an occult ceremony in his computer lab. Upon its completion, Sean is bowled over by both the overwhelming intelligence of the computer, and by Viv's affections that seemed to come from nowhere. Suddenly getting everything he ever wanted, he cannot believe his good fortune. But as the computer manipulates him to acquire ever more independence, he is forced to confront the reality that his creation is now controlling not only him, but increasingly, the whole world. The dream turns into a nightmare as he realizes he had been used as a pawn in the agenda of very powerful people. Little does he know that those powerful people were also used as pawns in a grand scheme beyond anyone's imagination.
