entertaining fourteenth century border war romance

In 1388, while the border war between England and Scotland is nasty, Lady Sorcha Hay learns her brother has been captured by English soldiers demanding a ransom. She and her clan cannot afford the price so Sorcha decides to emulate her sibling's capture by taking a soldier from the battlefield and hold him for ransom so that she can then remit the ransom for her brother. To his chagrin wounded warrior, Ruari Kerr has never been more humiliated in his life; he has been abducted from the battlefield by a beautiful woman who explains she holds him for ransom. He is furious with himself more than with her because he finds he wants her in his bed. Meanwhile Sorcha is attracted to her prisoner and encouraged by a ghost to take Ruari to her bed. The matchmaking ghost also prevents Ruari from escaping. As his people ransom him, they fall in love, but he feels strongly she betrayed their love. Besides, his pride remains battered by a woman besting him. He tries to kidnap Sorcha, but between her ghost and her clan he fails even as the treacherous Simon Treacher manipulates both of them and their respective allies for his gain. Written as Anna Jennet in the mid 1990s, MY LADY CAPTOR is an entertaining fourteenth century border war romance. The lead couple is a delightful pairing as a desperate Sorcha humiliates macho warrior Ruari as he cannot accept a beautiful woman defeated him even if he was wounded when she caught him. Worse in his mind is while her prisoner he wanted her and liberated still does. Ruari learns the hard way (no pun intended) "Pride goeth before destruction and a haughty spirit before a fall" (King James Bible). Readers will appreciate this amusing well written tale of medieval love. Harriet Klausner

Fans of Hannah Howell's early releases will jump for joy at the rerelease of MY LADY CAPTOR - his time for Zebra Books. Meet Lady Sorcha and Sir Ruari Kerr, two Scottish characters readers won't soon forget. Lady Sorcha Hay and her cousin are desperately trying to find Sorcha's brother on a bloody battlefield. Like so many others, they are grabbing what they can - not because they are thieves, but because they can't afford to be caught checking the corpses thus exposing themselves as Scottish - and searching for Sorcha's brother. When Sorcha makes a move to touch another body, she is astounded to hear the man curse her for being a scavenger. Upon further questioning, the man tells Sorcha that her brother has been taken captive and will more than likely be held for ransom. Ransom that Sorcha has no hopes of being able to pay. That is when she gets an idea. She takes the fallen knight captive in hopes that his family will pay to have him back. And they do, but not before Sorcha begins to fall in love with the English warrior. Ruari's family rescues him and Sorcha secretly wishes things could be different. If only the border wars between England and Scotland would end. Sorcha finds herself missing Ruari; after all, she loves him. But will that love be enough when the man that Sorcha loves kidnaps her and tries to spirit her away from her home? MY LADY CAPTOR takes place in Scotland as do many of Ms. Howell's releases. During this period of history, feudal wars were plentiful and border wars even more so. English and Scottish alike hated the other - and so they fought. Almost constantly. Sorcha is a Scottish lass and as such, family mean the world to her. Like most Scottish clans, Sorcha and her family were very close. Ruari was English and having Sorcha kidnap and hold him for money grated on his nerves as well as his reputation as a warrior. The longer he was with her, however, the less anger he felt. Their coming together in passion was sweetness itself and I hated to see Ruari leave his Sorcha even for a minute after his family liberated him. With plot twists and turns and even a bit of paranormal thrown in for good measure, MY LADY CAPTOR is a worthy read. MY LADY CAPTOR had laughter, loyalty, and love. Readers will be satisfied by the quick wit of both characters and the way they interact with each other. The rerelease of MY LADY CAPTOR is definitely a much welcomed addition to any keeper shelf. Great yarn!

This was a truly faboo read!Anna Jennet weaves a story that is ironic, funny and sweet without ever becoming sappy. She populates the tale with wonderful supporting characters and a touch of the supernatural. All of the ladies of the clan are portrayed with varying amounts of spunk and humor. And the heroine knows *exactly* what she is doing. No Scottish lassie would actually *want* to be captured, would she? Fantastic read. Even better the second or third time through.

A fun read

I enjoyed My Lady Captor. It's more entertaining than the official reviews seem to have it. The path of true love never runs smoothly - and this prooves it. It's mighty tough on a big strong man to find himself captured by a slip of a woman and her nutty family - all of them women - and held for ransom so they can use the ransom they get for him to get their lord (the only male in the family) back from the British. Several surprising characters are thrown in just to make things a little more interesting. If you can find it, it's worth the read. Have fun.
