So Disappointed

When I saw the title, I thought this would be a juicy read but I was so disappointed. The author is obsessed with materialistic things and over exaggerated subjects and items. She spends too much time with trivial details that do not matter. I was hoping that Tracey and Aaron relationship would fail because it was so wrong and immoral. The author kept us guessing until the end and it ended very stupid. The trouble with the book is that it is too long and drawn out and the author treats each character like a teen which is so boring and out of touch. I couldn't wait for this to end.

This book was just ok to me. It was good but it took me longer than usual to read it.

I felt really bad for the daughter. The mom is a hypocrite and the boyfriend was a DOG.

An amazing story

This book is amazing! It's told from the mother, the daughter, and the boyfriends viewpoints.(so you know what everyones thinking). The story pulls you right in, and you really feel for the characters, especially the daughter. This book I just about read non-stop; but Ms. Rax's other book "My husband's girlfiend" I had to read in spurts because being a wife myself for 18 years, I could only sympathize with the wife in the book and this itself would cause my blood pressure to rise. Overall, Ms. Rax is a very good writer, and I would recommend everyone to read all of her books. I did!

It Goes There

The author tackles this taboo topic with sensitivity, insight and courage. No matter what your feelings regarding a mother who sleeps with her daughter's boyfriend (and it's safe to assume most of us agree it's despicable), the author should be commended for dealing with such a racy subject head on and unflinchingly. Cydney Rax puts faces, voices and feelings to a situation most of us would avoid like the plague. The best fiction takes us places we normally would not go -it gives us an entertaining way to vicariously experience things foreign or off limits to us, and thereby opens up healthy dialogue about the risks, the fallout and the lasting consequences of such a taboo act without having to actually go through the drama ourselves. And that's exactly what this book does - it goes there without us having to "go there." Job well done, Cydney. Thanks for bringing something new and daring to the table. Looking forward to reading your next book!

A Bold Depiction of the Human Condition

Cydney Rax's My Daughters Boyfriend boldly goes where angels fear to tread. I read the reviews of this work prior to reading the novel and I have to say I totally disagree with much of the brazen invectives used to describe this depiction of a depraved unscrupulous soul. The truth of the matter is this: People do stupid stuff, period. As much as we don't want to air our own stupid decisions and the consequences thereof, My Daughter's Boyfriend does and does it incredibly well. If Ms. Rax had somehow justified the mother's unbridled lust like most works of this kind does, she would be praised as some sort of pioneer for women's rights, or better still, a mother's right to choose love over her daughters feelings. But Ms. Rax didn't do that. She took the road much less traveled and let the chips fall where they may, hurting many a feelings, no doubt, in the process. After all, isn't everything fair in love and war? Well, maybe not, but that has never stopped people for running roughshod over the feelings of others, whether they be the feelings of a loved one or a hated rival. The truth of the matter is this: This kind of thing happens more often then people care to think. Is it right? No! And Ms. Rax never said it was. She simple told a tale, making no excuses for the actions of her characters, which is what a true writer does. It's not the writer's job to give mothers like these morals. Besides, if this book wasn't so penetratingly true, perhaps the work would not have ruffled so many feathers. I like that about the book, frankly. Would I want a mother like the one portrayed in My Daughter's Boyfriend? No! But they are out there and they have been for decades, probably centuries. Further, if these things happen in real life, and readers complain of a lack of realism in novels today, My Daughter's Boyfriend is what they're looking for as it is real, direct, and truthful. Given the cover, the title, and the synopsis on the jacket, what were the naysayers expecting? The cover has a nude man lying between the sheets with a nude woman. Add the title, and I was thinking the mother is going to screw her daughter's boyfriend. Simple, right? Well, it was to me. I said, "Hmmm, let me check this one out; especially since I heard of specific mother's who have done this very thing." Bravo, Ms. Rax. Do ya thang! You do it well.

AWESOME!!

I really enjoyed this book. It was an easy read and it kept my attention. I kept reading and reading and just could not put it down because I wanted to find out what would happen next. I was pleased at the ending of the book......I was so happy that Tracey and Lauren reconciled and started to put their lives back together WITHOUT Aaron.

Great Debut

Cydney Rax makes her writing debut with My Daughter's Boyfriend, the story of a single mother raising her 17-year old daughter, Lauren. Tracy has always asked Lauren to wait until she has sex, which Lauren has no problem doing, but Aaron, Lauren's college boyfriend does. It is no secret that Tracy and Aaron will have a sexual relationship, one they obviously must hide from Lauren. And one, Tracy harbors guilt for, but will her guilt make her stop something that she should never have started in the first place? What, besides sex, does this thirty-something single mother have in common with a college student? And how on earth could a mother sleep with her daughter's boyfriend? I'm sure some readers will be able to relate because there are some who have either been the mother, the daughter or the boyfriend. As I was reading the book, I found it hard to believe that this was the author's first novel. I loved the fact the story line did not get weighed down with too much description and that Cydney Rax left enough for the reader's imagination to take over. My Daughter's Boyfriend is not a story that is told often, but we all know this happens. Being a mother of a teenage daughter, I tried to put myself in Tracy's shoes. I couldn't see myself falling into such a love triangle. At times, I was so upset with the mother, I wanted to put the book down, but couldn't because I wanted to know what would happen to that messy situation in the end. While reading, I was on an emotional rollercoaster. One minute, I hated Tracy and thought she was immature and irrational, the next, I felt sorry for her. In the end, the book did not leave me disappointed and I have included this novel as a recommended read for Ebony Dimensions Book club. I'm sure we're going to have fun with this one, and knowing the ladies, our discussion will get quite lively.(...)
