Gentle silliness

Welcome back to the Okefenokee swamp! This time, we see Howland Owl setting out to better the world by writing scripts for people's lives. He can create thrills, excitement, romance, or mystery for you - using his own slightly mangled sense of dramatic narrative, of course, and over their somewhat baffled objections. Originally appearing between 1958 and 1960, these cartoons acknowledge the nervous background of Sputnik and the Red Menace. As always, Churchy and Owl go to inane extremes in responding, while Pogo and his prickly friend go on about the business of their lives. "Beau Pogo" represents a quiet moment in this long-lived and peaceful comic. Miz Beaver and Mam'selle Hepzibah deal with their love lives (and others') as usual, Beauregard deals witlessly with Sam's petty scams, and all's right with the world. Pogo charms readers as much today as he did then, but with an added patina of nostalgia for that time that now seems so simple. -- wiredweird
