Adjusting to life as a wealthy widow, Ellie Quicke is shattered to hear that her difficult but endearing Aunt Drusilla has been killed in a freak accident. Her only son, Roy, is also devastated. However, Aunt Drusilla has made many enemies in her time, among them Ellie's selfish daughter Diana, who believes she's her great-aunt's heir. What if it were not a genuine accident? And what if Aunt Drusilla's cleaner were missing? The police are suspicious of all those closest to Aunt Drusilla, which includes not only her family but all those who have worked for her...and their families, too. Ellie struggles to keep her dysfunctional family from falling apart as each one in turn is suspected of murder.
I've read earlier Veronica Heley books in the "Murder by...." series and find once again, in Murder by Accident, that she is a master of the intricate plot. You really need to move fast to keep abreast of the twists and turns, all of which are very neatly wrapped up by the end. Ellie continues to be helpful in her community and overly helpful in her family with usually unhappy results. Her daughter invariably causes trouble, her aunt remains demanding and Ellie handles them all with grace. Real estate deals expand and shrink, the good guys don't always look so good and the ending contains some good surprises. Ms. Heley is more than competent in her arrangement of clues and has polished her Ellie character to perfection. A 110% cozy which will hold your attention all the way through.
