If you are looking for a simple easy-to-learn course in self-protection, this is a book to get. I met Liddon Griffith in the 70's when I worked with his supervisor Lt. David King of the NYC Housing Police in recruiting cadets for his community program. Griffith was a black belt in Mi Yama Ryu Jiu Jitsu and an instructor at the Police Acadamy, when his 80 year old grandfather was mugged and beaten. Liddon decided to cull from his training those techniques which would be effective yet easy to learn even for an 80 year old. He used ex-muggers in his research and through trial and error added techniques that worked, and discarded those that didn't or were to hard to learn. The result was a self-protection course that hundreds of seniors enrolled in. There was so much interest in his course, that he wrote this book and produced a half hour educational film that was sent to various organizations and libraries. this book illustrates those techniques and how to train. It is also chock full of information and tips on how to avoid robberies and many testimonies of former students who used these techniques in real life encounters. I have found that for effective and practical self defense police instructors are the best. I would include authors like Robert Barthol and John Perkins in this category. But for young or old, male or female, check out this book.
