Mud Around My Lotus Roots: Reflections on why my life is still blooming

Born in the segregated south, my life's story traces seven decades of self-discovery, social awakening and personal liberation- through the Civil Rights Movement, The Vietnam War, the Sexual Revolution, the advent of Asian spirituality in America, life in Franco's Spain and Indhira Gandhi's India, and multiple career: as sculptor, teacher, writer, interpreter, clergyman, and advocate for cultural competence and multi-cultural understanding. The book attempts to reveal how the distinct and seemingly disparate threads of my life experience- sex, love, relationships, language, art, music, spirituality, career, and travel- are all integrally interwoven. Consequently, I have accepted that to do so honestly requires a willingness to be vulnerable on my part, and to articulate intimate and sometimes painful or embarrassing experiences that are seldom topics of open conversation. I do so not to be provocative, and certainly not to lay blame on anyone for their role in my experience, but only to report what I experienced, how I experienced it at the time, and how I understand it now, in the hopes it will encourage others in facing and embracing their own histories, heal any wounds they may be carrying from them, celebrate their triumphs, and truly flourish.
