Beautiful, intelligent and entrancing, young Kate Chase Sprague stepped into the role of establishing her thrice-widowed father, Salmon P. Chase, in Washington society as a Lincoln cabinet member and as a future presidential candidate. For her efforts, The Washington Star declared her the most brilliant woman of her day. None outshone her.' None, that is, but Mary Todd Lincoln. Though Mrs Lincoln and her young rival held much in common, they could never be friends, for the success of one could come only at the expense of the other.'
I loved this book. LOTS of detail and historical information. In the end I was so sad to know that Kate's marriage was such a failure. I kept asking her in my head "can't you see William is not who he pretends to be?". Oh had she only married John Hay. That said., PLEASE write a book about Nettie - the more successful sister in the end! Not much about her out there but I know know she was a children's book illustrator and helped develop the "Hamptons" as a resort. The fact that she was successful in her own right honestly outshines her "more popular"
sister Kate!
