Mrs. Hobson's Choice

By J.M. Powell

gripping, vulnerable, and illuminating story of intimate partner abuse and the power of community.

Only Elizabeth, a young mother of two, knows her husband's disturbing, narcissistic contradictions. Beneath the charm the world sees lurks a cruel undercurrent. When this cruelty starts to affect her children, she knows she must flee with them.

But doing so will be no easy task. It will require months of preparation, and she can leave no clue as to her intentions. Her husband could very well track her down, just as he always threatened. It's a risk; however, that she must take.

When she finally executes her agonizingly detailed plan, the reality of living on the run proves more difficult than she'd ever imagined, and she finds herself forced to rely on the kindness and support of women she'd never allowed herself to believe she had anything in common with.

As the dust settles and a new life unfolds before her, Elizabeth yearns for answers. Through conversations with a therapist and new friends at a women's shelter, she explores tough questions, including How did I end up here? How did it come to this?

And, most importantly, Will my children and I ever be truly safe?

Inspired by true events, Mrs. Hobson's Choice pulls back the curtain on the stigma imposed by a society that often lays blame on the victims, and on how that stigma is absorbed by the victims. It sheds light on the monstrous hurdles many survivors face when trying to escape.
