Excellent advice based on sound child psychology

Parenting advice is substantive and full of practical advice on how to parent using sound child psychology. Furutan is resuls oriented. He explains the perspective of the child when a parent does this or that. Topics include how to prevent lying, why to avoid sarcasm, how to create positive self esteem, and the most importantly, how a child's imagination is so powerful that unless we protect them from certain images in the media, even the news, they do not know the limits of disasters or anything else, thus creating a more fearful condition in their lives. I was also amazed to learn that the effects of shouting may become apparent at the time, but how shouting at a child negatively affects their nervous system as adults. Shouting causes the child to lose self-esteem, become nervous, and fear new situations--it causes them to lose their innate self-confidence--even their voice becomes weak and soft in speaking to people. It's helped me to become a more effective and gentle parent with happy, responsive children. I understand how my child sees the world better than ever before. I feel more confident as a parent knowing that it is alright to be firm about what my child views on TV or in movies and what they read. Because of this my children have restful sleep and no nightmares. I found the reasoning "why" to do something as valuable as the advice. Particularly when I share some of the advice and information with my friends they heartily agree with the ideas presented in this book though to some this would seem counter current thinking in the media. What a refreshing book! Highly recommended. Furutan is a superb child psychologist.
