This is the tale of one day in early San Francisco history, November 11, 1889. It features characters who, in many ways, epitomize the spirit and events of the Gold Rush and post-Gold Rush days. It follows the story of Robert Woodward one of many young adventurous souls who took a gamble and headed west. He didn't mine gold but made a fortune supplying the newcomers and dreamers with their necessities. Monarch, the bear hero of this tale, also symbolizes the California story. He is a grizzly, as rugged as the settlers that arrived to the Golden State. Like his human counterparts, he had to adjust to a new existence full of challenges and unknowns. Woodward knew he was blessed with a "Divine Providence" that led him to riches beyond his wildest expectations. It is what he did with that fortune that counted in the creation of his amusement park, Woodward's Gardens, the eventual home of Monarch the Grizzly aka "Monarch's Garden."
