Modern Buddism is one of 23 books written by Kelsang Gyatso. It is recommended that you start with " How to transform Your Life." As the other reader stated, it is a very technical book. Kelsang's books and Path are incredible, but require study. However, there is a very extensive glossary at the back of the book for unknown terms. At any New Kadampa Centers there are classes being taught. Google New Kadampa Tradition for more info or go to Tharpa.org.
When I first began studying Buddhism, I wanted a "fluffy, feel good" book. This is not that book. This is for a serious student who is willing to work to change their mind and life.
Extremely confusing and opaque

I’m not going to say much other than I’m interested in Buddhism as a possible means of dealing with depression, rooting from feeling no higher meaning in life. I got about 3/4th through volume 1 of this book before I stopped reading because I simply couldn’t undersand about 80 percent of it. One one hand, it seems like it’s written for Buddhists and not for people who are new to it. The author uses so much shorthand and terminology that is never explained or defined. On the other hand, the title is Modern Buddhism: The Path of Compassion and Wisdom, but there’s nothing in here that actually teaches the reader how to apply the teachings of Buddhism to their real-day life.
