Makeup is the fastest-growing sector in the beauty industry, and is expected to grow by 40%. Personal appearance workers will grow by 14 percent from 2006 to 2016, which is faster than the average for all occupations. Estheticians and other skincare specialists will see large gains in employment, and are expected to grow 34 percent from 2006 to 2016. There are approximately 183,000 estheticians licensed in the United States. (ASCP 2007) There are approximately 1100 esthetics programs in the United States (ASCP 2009) Many skin care professionals are relatively new to the profession. About 90 percent of practitioners have been in the field less than 12 years; 73 percent have practiced fewer than five years. (ASCP 2006) One report states that every esthetician that graduates, there are six available jobs for her.
