Two tiny Chihuahua brothers. Thirty-nine pesos. One impossible journey north.
Mick is only two months old when life in Tijuana changes forever. With danger closing in and nowhere left to hide, his mother, Loba, presses everything she has into the paws of Mick and his brother Rico-thirty-nine pesos-and sends them toward America with one command: run.
What follows is a funny, frightening and tender adventure across a country neither puppy understands. They dodge danger, steal meals, hide on trains, survive desert heat, battle bitter cold and discover that humans can be just as strange as dogs. Their courage is constantly tested, usually at the exact moment one of them is arguing about food.
But Chicago changes everything. Forced onto different paths, the brothers are separated. Rico heads toward Pittsburgh, where a firehouse crew, a near-fatal bridge accident and a determined firefighter give him a new family. Mick keeps moving east through snow, strangers, rescue homes and disasters until his road finally bends toward Fairport, New York.
There, the adventure becomes something deeper.
Mick enters the life of an older woman still carrying the memory of Charlie, the beloved Chihuahua who came before him. Mick cannot replace Charlie-and never tries. Instead, through lake days, blankets, fishing trips, stubborn routines and the quiet way he learns to watch over her, Mick becomes something almost impossible to explain: not simply her dog, but family.
Inspired by the real bond between David Salmon's mother and the Chihuahua who became her constant companion, Mick Chihuahua & the 39-Peso Dream blends road adventure, brotherhood, humor, grief and the emotional intelligence of dogs.
From Tijuana to Chicago, Pittsburgh, Fairport and Duck Lake, Mick and Rico learn that home is not always where you begin. Sometimes it is the place where someone is waiting for you.
Along the way, survival becomes only the first challenge. The harder lesson is learning to trust after fear and separation. Rico learns that distance does not erase brotherhood. Mick learns that loving him does not require Charlie's memory to disappear. At Duck Lake, on boats, beside fishing poles and under old blankets, the little dog who once survived by watching for danger begins watching one person because he loves her.
That is the heart of the story: a Chihuahua's journey from running for his life to discovering that he no longer has to run.
