Fantastic reference once you feel comfortable taking measurements and making a sloper.

I am satisfied that I may not have to buy patterns for myself anymore. The book shows how to make many pattern changes for style, if it isn’t in the book, you’ll have to work it out, but the required knowledge is all there. The book covers a wide range of garments - pants, blouses, dresses, jackets and coats, and knitwear. This book is best for someone who has sewn up several commercial patterns for themselves, and has a basic grasp of fitting. You’ll need to be able to measure yourself and make a sloper (instructions provided, though they aren’t extremely detailed), and follow directions for making paper pattern modifications. You’ll need tracing paper, drafting tools, and some patience. The book has a short section on fitting, but a separate title that is more focused on fitting (particularly tissue fitting) would be a great companion. This book doesn’t always show how to make the fitting correction. I docked one star because there are multiple spots where the directions and pictures do not match. For example, “connect dots 1 and 2” is written, but the pictures clearly show you’ll need to connect 0 and 2 instead. It’s also unclear at times when to add a measurement - for example, it will say “half the waist plus 1.5cm.” Is that my waist measurement, plus 1.5, and then a quarter of that? Or quarter the waist, and then add 1.5? Usually, reading the whole set of instructions, these can be inferred, but it takes a bit of extra work. As a result, I expect to mark up my copy to correct the occasional mistake. However, this book will be a fantastic reference.
