It all started with a TV series. Sometime around 1993, I watched a segment of The Astronomers, one featuring a young Italian woman. In addition to the astronomy material, there was some personal footage including her strolling through a small Sicilian town during a religious procession. The young people were singing. The language was lyrical and their joy in life palpable. I immediately wanted to go to Italy. Beverley agreed. Our first opportunity came in 1995 when we visited our daughter and son-in-law living in Israel. Italy is on the way, so why not a two-week stop-over on the way. The planned itinerary included an afternoon in Bologna visiting Gisella Clementini, an astronomer we had met earlier at a variable star conference in British Columbia. We had no idea this brief visit would have such a significant impact on our lives. It turned out they were strongly interested in a project I was working on and invited me to come to Italy to work with them. The collaborative research brought us to Italy many times over the next decade.
