A brief account of medical aid in dying in Canada (MAiD): how it came to be, the current law, possible changes to this law, obstacles to obtaining it and aspects of conscientious objection to it. Since Bill C-14, Canada's medical aid in dying law was passed in June 2016, approximately 3000 persons have availed themselves of it, the majority of whom were suffering from end-stage cancer. This equates to approximately 1% of all deaths in Canada. The different approaches adopted by various provinces are touched upon. The pioneering work of Dying with Dignity, Canada and the Canadian Association of Medical Aid in Dying Assessors and Providers is outlined. To date there is no sign that the dreaded 'slippery slope', much bruited about by opponents of MAiD, is coming to pass. Several desirable changes to the current law are discussed. The tardiness of some provincial health plans in setting reasonable fees for medical practitioners, who undertake this important, time consuming and emotionally draining work is addressed.
