This book focuses on mechanical behavior, deformation, and fractureof materials, and how they play a critical role in the design ofmechanical components under a variety of loading conditions. We have taken the approach of educating design engineers the keyaspects of mechanical properties of material; in particular testmethodologies to obtain important design parameters, and how theyare taken into consideration during design for a variety ofapplications, such as static, fatigue and creep loading. The firstpart of the book presents an overview of mechanical design data, including the impact of statistical variation. Thesecond section has a detailed discussion of the testing methods forobtaining this data. The third part discusses the role ofmicro- and macro-structure on mechanical behavior ofmaterials. The emphasis will be on metals used for loadbearing applications, with less emphasis on the other threematerial classes - ceramics, polymers andcomposites. The last section deals with the application of theabove to various design situations.
