A Lifelong Gift

I have searched for years to find this gift and memory of memories. Beginning in the third grade, this was first read to me in a small one room school house nestled in the magnificent Sierra Nevada mountains by a teacher who opened the doors to imagination, literature, music, theater, self discovery, and life. Then gently knudged us through each door. Mr. Ed Hoff read that book to us year after year. And, each year regardless of our age or height, we listened with earnest and anticipation and never were we disappointed. As my four siblings followed behind me, Mr. Hoff read Me and Caleb to them year after year passing on the gift of childhood, of imagination, and passion for life. Years later, after hearing each of us talk about this book for over 20 years, my dad, a bus driver for the school, was passing Mr. Hoff's classroom one afternoon and found himself stopping to listen and be absorbed and entertained by the magical and heartwarming tales of a story he had known only from his childrens dinner time conversation. A story that he stopped to hear each afternoon it was read. A story that traveled full circle in a family's history as a father called his adult daughter to speak of a book with the same excitement in his voice that she had in hers when she told him about it so many years earlier. Truly, a celebration of childhood and of life, I am certain the story of Me and Caleb echoes even now in the pines of the Sierras.
Me and Caleb

This book was read to my 6th grade class in Beaumont, TX years ago. I have searched for it for several years. It is a wonderful story, as I recall everyone in class loved the book, boys and girls. We laughed and cried and pondered over our own lives, but most of all it showed us that reading could be very fun!!
A true classic!

It's been almost 20 years since I've turned the pages of this book and yet I still remember it clearly. Inspiration derived from Me and Caleb is to blame for many of my fondest childhood adventures. A prime example of friendshjp, courage and compassion from a child's-eye-view; if only such a book existed for thirty-somethings!
An excellent book for young adults.
