Matt: Warriors & Wagon Trains During the Civil War

It is 1864 and the US government is making war on the citizens of Missouri. The Union military has been fighting against southern sympathizers for the past four years and is now targeting anyone suspected of supporting the local guerillas. Martha Estelle Logan, "Matt", is a rural school teacher in central Missouri in love with Josiah Riffel, a rebel whose guerrilla band includes Bloody Bill Anderson, Frank and Jesse James, and Cole and Jim Younger. The local Provost Marshall has discovered Matt's relationship with Josiah and she has no choice but to flee the state by wagon train along the Oregon Trail west to Sacramento, California. To stay would mean the loss of the family farm and the imprisonment and possible death of her loved ones. As Matt travels west suffering the hardships of her journey, Josiah continues his campaign to free the people of his home state from the tyrannical rule of a Union military totally out of control. Fighting for their survival, they wonder if the conflict will ever end. Will they see one another again or will the Civil War and the Oregon Trail claim two more victims?"Warriors and Wagon Trains" is a work of historical fiction based on the true diary of Martha Estelle Logan of Littleby, Missouri. The diary was written in 1864 as she traveled west by wagon train to Sacramento, California. The guerrilla campaign waged by Josiah is based on true events that took place in Missouri between 1861 and 1865. I am a retired history professor who has taught American and European history for the past 27 years at Columbia College.
