Mathematical models have played an integral role in the development of the sciences of evolution and ecology, and giving beginning students a comprehensive introduction to this approach can greatly enhance their understanding of these fields. This book provides readers with the mathematical building blocks used to model evolution--how to write equations describing natural selection, migration, mutation, sexual selection, and genetic drift--and shows how to combine them to address complex evolutionary questions. The text offers both an entry point to mathematical modeling and a thorough conceptual treatment of evolutionary and select ecological processes. Approaches for accompanying student work include pencil and paper as well as with the programming platforms Mathematica and R.
