The time is the near future-not quite a generation from now. The setting is Masters Falls: a massive commercial and entertainment complex along the Potomac River, quite near New Washington, aka New Town. American life is different after the Agitation, but recognizable-the way a person who has been through a life-altering accident is recognizable. Masters Falls seeks to resurrect the broken spirit of America, but the methods of "The Dam" are widely criticized as regressive and repressive.

Caroline is a struggling journalist, who secures a once-in-a-lifetime interview with MorningStar, the elusive master of Masters Falls. David is a former partner to MorningStar, now on a secret mission to undermine him and to commandeer an A.I. algorithm gone so awry. Neither David nor Caroline have any idea what they're dealing with as they try to take on the Dam. But then maybe Masters Falls has no idea what changes this night will bring through this unlikely pairing.

Past the smoke of entitlement and exceptionalism, we glimpse the redeemability of our intelligence, both human and artificial.
