MARY McLEOD BETHUNE: A School Built on Hope
She began with little more than faith, determination, and a belief that education could change lives.
In an era when opportunity was deliberately withheld from Black Americans-especially Black women-Mary McLeod Bethune refused to accept the limits placed before her.
A School Built on Hope brings to life the extraordinary journey of a woman who transformed hardship into purpose. Born to formerly enslaved parents, Bethune understood from an early age that education offered a path toward freedom, independence, and dignity. With courage, discipline, and an unwavering commitment to her people, she set out to create opportunities where few existed.
From the humble beginnings of a small school for Black girls in Daytona, Florida, Bethune built an educational institution that would grow into Bethune-Cookman College. Her influence eventually reached far beyond the classroom as she became a nationally respected educator, organizer, advocate, and adviser whose work helped open doors for generations of African Americans.
Through moments of struggle, sacrifice, family, faith, leadership, and triumph, A School Built on Hope explores not only what Mary McLeod Bethune accomplished, but the determination that allowed her to continue when money was scarce, opposition was strong, and success was anything but guaranteed.
This historical novel celebrates the life of a woman who understood that building a school meant building something greater: confidence, opportunity, leadership, and hope for generations yet to come.
For readers of African American history, historical fiction, women's history, and stories of perseverance and education, A School Built on Hope is a powerful reminder that one person's vision can become the foundation for countless futures.
