Martin Chuzzlewit (Annotated)

Differentiated book- It has a historical context with research of the time-Martin Chuzzlewit by Charles Dickens. It is a novel by the British writer Charles Dickens, considered the last of his picaresque novels. It was originally serialized between 1843-44. Dickens proclaimed that Martin Chuzzlewit may be his best work, but it was one of the least popular. Like almost all Dickens novels, Martin Chuzzlewit was released to the public in monthly installments. Initial sales of the installments were disappointing compared to previous jobs, so Dickens changed the plan to send the title character to the United States. This allowed the author to satirically portray the United States (which he had visited in 1842) as a desert near civilization with pockets full of street vendors misleading and self-promoting. The main theme of the novel, according to a preface by Dickens, is selfishness, interpreted in a satirical way with all the members of the Chuzzlewit family. The novel is also notable for two of Dickens' great villains, Seth Pecksniff and Jonas Chuzzlewit. It is dedicated to Angela Georgina Burdett-Coutts, a friend of Dickens. The novel was adapted into a television miniseries in 1994 with a script by writer David Lodge. Charles Dickens - Charles John Huffam Dickens FRSA (February 7, 1812 - June 9, 1870)
