Book Overview

During the day, a marsh comes alive with the sounds of birds. As dawn appears, a single heron stands motionless offshore, and then the blackbird begins the first melody. Soon the dawn chorus swells as the warblers and sparrows and wrens chime in. The marsh begins to rock as the woodpeckers drum out the beat and other species pick up the rhythm. Just before dusk, the birds gradually become quiet--but the serenade is not over. . . Although the story is a fantasy, each of the different species of birds has been carefully portrayed, and described by the author in an Afterword. The musical terms are defined in a glossary. Young naturalists who are fond of birds as well as youngsters who enjoy music will have a wonderful time as part of the marsh's daytime audience.

Excellent Book for teaching

I am an early childhood educator, and I love this book. It teaches about nature, habitat diversity, and music. Kids can really get involved making bird sounds, and it is a great addition to a lesson about bird calls. Good for children ages 4-10.

Regardless of whether you are a bird watcher or music lover, Berkes's rhythmic language will engage anyone who reads her book. The artistic representations reveal a diversity of birds while exhibiting the most spectacular surroundings; these phenomenal watercolor illustrations allow the reader to truly experience the environment. The glossary of musical terms and descriptions of birds lend to this book's informative nature. The story and pictures are sure to delight both the young and old alike!

Another excellent book by Marianne Berkes

To complement "Marsh Music", "Marsh Morning" talks in a poetic form about bird songs in the marsh. This picture book combines music, poetry and "bird watching." The illustrations go fabulously with the text. The glossary explains each of the 15 birds, its physical description and its voice. The bibliography of bird books adds to its worth. A wonderful addition in many ways.
