Mark of Cain
Cain has outlived every city that ever tried to hold him. The Mark set on him in that first field was never armor. It made him forgettable. People look straight at him and their attention slides off. Names refuse to stick. He is a hole in the world, and he has been falling through it for thousands of years.
He survives on guilt. He finds killers, presses close, and drinks the shame they carry. It keeps his body upright. It never touches the thing rotting underneath.
Then he comes to Detroit, and someone leaves a body in a parkette with its skull opened by a stone.

The killings do not stop at one. Each ritual sits deeper than the last. A parkette. A dead factory. A crypt under a church where the floor has been carved into a circle and packed with something dark. The cult works through the stages like a liturgy, and with every stage the Mark on Cain wears thinner. Strangers start holding his gaze a half second too long. Cameras catch him. The one protection he never asked for begins to fail, and the whole city starts to see the man underneath.
The cult calls its leader The Shepherd. Behind the sermon stands something colder, a Watcher that stepped out of its lane and decided the first curse should change hands. In a bookshop that smells of rot and iron, the Weavers keep a ledger bound in skin and sell knowledge to anyone willing to pay in blood. They want the Mark cut off Cain and stitched onto someone new. What happens to the man left behind does not enter their accounting.
Detective Maya Reyes should not be able to see him. She does. Something in her blood refuses the Mark, and it makes her the only person in Detroit who can hold Cain's face in her memory overnight. That gift paints a target on her back. It also hands Cain the first ally he has had since the field.
Reyes has her own problem. She can document a carved circle and a body. She cannot put a rogue angel in a report and keep her badge. Her department wants a clean cult bust and a name to charge. She has an immortal in her passenger seat and a debt owed to a shop that does not take money.
Above them, the Watchers descend. Sterile. Patient. Uninterested in mercy. They want the story to end the way it was written.
To break the final ritual, Cain has to do the one thing he has run from for thousands of years. He has to stand in front of what he did and say it out loud.
