Book Overview

The books in the Making Out series are fun and accessible guides to languages as they're spoken on the street. These classic phrase books have been updated and expanded for use in informal situations such as bars, parties, or anywhere else one needs to know slang to survive! The books also now feature phrases written in their native script as well as in English, so the book can be shown to the person you are trying to communicate with. With transcriptions...

Cute, yet functional

I got this and Dirty Japanese for my son and his girlfriend, so they could be silly at each other and maybe improve their minds with another language at the same time. I liked them so much I wish I'd picked them up for myself. I'd recommend these books for anyone trying to learn casual Japanese. Delivery was about what I expected and the transactions came off without a hitch.

The missing link in your Japanese conversation ability

I strongly recommend this book to the Japanese learner who is somewhat advanced (JLPT level 3 or stronger ability), and who wants to improve their conversation ability. And pick up chicks. Yes, there are good lines to use on women (or men), and most of them are not out of date slang or anything. Personally, I'm not one of the foreigners in Japan that lurks in the dark corners of bars, but I've found the book extremely helpful in filling in the gaps of my textbook Japanese knowledge. The book doesn't actually focus on cheesy lines for getting a date--there's useful expressions for all walks of daily life. However, if you are a novice Japanese learner, or have studied less than a year, I really do not recommend picking up the book just yet. The book just has lines that help you start conversations, slang you otherwise wouldn't know, or fill in awkward pauses.

GREAT , FUNNY and EDUCATIONAL BOOK

I saw this book in the movie "Lost In Translation" in the special feature section of the movie. Bill Murray uses it to translate some funny phrases, and some very comical scenes ensue. So I had to get it and learn some Japanese and let Me say it has some really hilarious phrases you can use on your friends, lovers or Japanese people that one may come in contact with. I've had so much fun with it and you will learn some Japanese with a very comedic edge. Enjoy!!!

Not for serious learning of Nihongo

But still quite fun. Slang is a bit outdated, but the Japanese I learned in college in 1992-93 is already outdated. Also, slang varies from city to city, and this is only glossed over. Still, I enjoyed this book and it's sequel.

Naughty and nice!

This series is a lot of fun. The romaji text is spelled really no-frills (See _Barron's Japanese at a Glance_ for precision in spelling and annotation). There is also no Japanese text. However, and this is a big however, the intelligence contained herein will get you much further than any other phrase book I've seen!
