Book Overview

Aged thirteen, Martha is rescued by the courts from the clutches of her evil stepfather, Jackser, and her feckless mother, Sally. After numerous arrests for shoplifting, a judge rules that she is to be sent to a convent school with the instruction that she is to get an education.

Ma He sold me for a packed of cigarettes

I loved this book, I couldn't put it down and had to keep my husband updated, and when it was possible I had to read it out loud so he could follow Martha's story.

Wonderful book!!

This book is the sequel to "Ma, he sold me for a few cigarettes" which is about a little girls terrible upbringing in Ireland in the 50's. I couldn't put either of them down and can't wait for Martha Long's next book.

Fantastic book!

I picked this up at the airport in Dublin. I couldn't put it down. I finished it before we landed in Philadelphia. What a story! Now I want to read the first one. I haven't read a story so well written since Bryce Courtenay's "The Power of One". I would definitely recommend reading anything written by Martha Long.

Ma, I'm getting meself a new mammy

I agree with the first reviewer, After reading the first book, I could not wait to start the second. Her journey continues where the last book leaves off. I thought it was great. The nun's were not easy to live with, but she does get back at them one way or another. It makes you laugh and then you feel so sad for her. She is still looking for love, for someone to tell her "she's worth something in life". The doors close, or should I say open, once again on her at the age of 16, where she is once again on her own, but she has a plan. I do hope there is another book to see where her life takes her. My hat is off to you Martha, Your children should be VERY proud of YOU.

Good read

With the end of 'Ma, he sold me for a few cigarettes', I had to know if the author had written any follow up books. Obviously this little girl had grown into a woman and had more to say than where her 1st book left off at, age 11 or 12. I was not disappointed. This book does not keep as interested as her 1st, however it is amazing to me what this poor girl indured and is determined to make something of her life. I honestly can not wait to find out if she has/is writting yet another book telling how she does in fact bring herself out of poverty and start a family of her own. In my opinion it take a heck of person to do that. Most would have given up & either died or lead a life of crime or drugs. But not this lady! She simply wants the love and affection every child deserves!! She makes me want to take her from the book & put her in my home and love, care & fuss over her!!! I will definitely be reading anything she writes about her life!!!
